It is NOT a cliché.
Italian men are obsessed with women, and they do anything but hide it.
If you are a girl/woman and don't look like Fiona from Shrek, the first thing you will notice about rome are the Men, and the way they look at you.
This is one city that is not for feminists.
when you walk past, they will look you up and down with no shame, be they 13 years old or 100, a delivery boy, a waiter, a doctor or a police officer. Then there are also the comments. Obviously, every single one of us is "la più bella del mondo".

At first you will feel special
Then you'll find it funny
Then you'll just find it plain irritating... for a loooong time
But in the end you will get so used to it that when you walk past an italian man and he doesn't turn around and look at you, you will actually feel shocked!
So don't be offended. At least it is an ego boost. And it is as much a part of the culture as the food or Calcio (football)
