49

Outside the 49

7:00 am - the 49 Effect

Still the 49 effect... :)

Me, Rita & Camille (from L->R)

Guido - Hanno Uciso l'uomo Ragno

creepy wannabe-80's-rockstar-mickey-rourke-look-alike!

49 - Vicolo dei Soldati , 49. (nxt to Piazza Navona)

The infamous karaoké bar, that everyone has heard the stories about , but that no one has actually been to except for a lucky few! I'm not even going to try to describe it... its mythical lol
Open from 4 am to 6 am, its in one of those little streets that you found once accidentaly when you were drunk, but seem to be unable to find during the day while sober... maybe it just dissapears!
You knock on the door of number 49, or ring the doorbell and wait to be buzzed!; Pay the dodgy guy at the bottom of the stairs ten euros and enter the lair of what is pretty much roman Mafia.

I discovered the place on the 19th of May ,after having been to the Opening Night of l'AREA... it was by very very far my happiest night in Rome... I've always had kind of a love hate relationship with karaoké, (unless charles is standing next to me at the Bar Belge in Paris! and we're singing kids in America). See, I can't carry a tune to save my life so yeah... but my Friend convinced me to get up on the stage and sing Come Mai by 883 with a bunch of 50 year old strangers... After the DJ shouted out"Morgane sei la regina del 49" , claiming that everyone was talking about me, I decided I loved the place, and have been back almost every week. When you Leave l'AREA or la Maison Estiva, don't even bother asking where we're going. Its the only place to go. Whether you want to sing italian classics, or french oldies, or hum away to some sinatra, its the place to go for an unforgettable experience and amazing memories :)

Ladies beware : you think Romans are flirty... well you haven't seen anything yet! And beware also for the DJ Offering to "carry on the concert" in his "bellissimo palazzo",or the relic from the 80's throwing his guitar around the tiny stage and stomping around in his cowboy boots!

HOTEL DE RUSSIE- Via del Babuino

HOTEL DE RUSSIE - Via del Babuino

Welcome to my favourite place to run to when everything seems to go wrong. It is a place where you can find peace and serenity. You leave all your problems with the austere men in top Hats at the entrance. Here time stops. The noise of the city disappears.

It is the place I've gone to countless times with charlotte when we have had enough of our Roman men and drama... for Spritz or Brunch or Lunch. Here you seem to find solutions to your problems, rather than new problems. It is also a wonderfull place to make fun of the women who've had 90% of their body redone and look like .... like something really really creepy. Not to forget , it is the place where you see a constant fashion show of Birkins and Kelly's, and of beautiful boys in crisp white shirts sitting in the Stravinski bar in the summer

PS : I'm on my way there right now to have drinks with my dad :)

"The most unique luxury hotel in Rome, Hotel de Russie provides a stunning feature - extensive, terraced gardens, the “Secret Garden” ,so called because hidden behind the building which overlooks Via del Babuino which provide a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle of central Rome where you can dine alfresco at “Le Jardin de Russie” Restaurant or enjoy a peaceful stroll. BIKE SHARING

Chilling at Piazza del Popolo after a 4hour bike tour around Rome

BIKE SHARING

The first thing you need to do is get your bike sharing card. It costs nothing, and its so much fun to discover the city on a bike, at night, after aperitivo when it's not too hot. Get your card at either the Termini, Lepanto or Spagna metro stations. It costs 10 euros. To get it you need your ID and your Codice Fiscale. You can use it immediatly. Get you bike at piazza del Popolo, go all around the city, up to villa borghese if you have the legs for it, back down, to the vatican, along the Tevere, all the way up to ponte Milvio, to piazza barberini and via veneto.... then drop it off and sit by the fountains on Piazza del popolo and put your feet in the freezing water. Take a friend. going alone takes half the fun out of it. But remember that italians and driving.... not really a great match, so watch out when you're on the big streets, and try to avoid them as much as possible; stick to the small side streets...

and ENJOY :)

GUSTO - Appertivo

GUSTO - Piazza Augusto Imperatore/ Via Della Frezza

So I've been talking alot about place to dance and drink, but remember rome's most wonderful treasure is it's food! Here you will discover the concept of the Aperitivo . It's pretty much like the french Apéro' . In alot of places around rome, from 6pm to 9pm, you can go for aperitivo. This usually means a buffet.

Gusto Wine bar is by far my Favourite place for Apperitivo - The food is amazingly good, and healthier than in the other places!; There's also alot more choice. And for 10 euros you get a drink and all you can eat! perfect no? I've been there more times than I can count this year but it never gets old. it's the perfect place to go to gossip with a friend, or on a date when you want something less casual than a coffee , but less official than diner! Everyone is always up for aperitivo.
After an afternoon spent shopping on via del corso , or biking around villa borghese, go to Via della Frezza to enjoy a spritz , mozzarelline, Suppli, a variety of salades, quiches, pasta and bruschette!

SLOPPY SAM'S --- Campo Dei Fiori

"we're meeting up at 11" - "At sloppy's?" - "DUUUH!"

Sloppy's was my home from september to march. I spent way too much time there for my own good. During my first months in Rome i was there literally every night! Yet again I can thank Martina Crr for introducing to me to what would be a Safe Haven in the messiness Rome was for me at first. It actually became home. I will always remember the night when Charlie G and i went there for a quiet drink after lectures and ended up behind the bar mixing Cocktails with James and Dave and and eating the best homemade (by Dave- though James R just informed me that his is better) salsa in the whole wide world. This place is filled with so many great memories. THANK YOU SLOPPY'S

Ask James for a dirty martini. They're the best , and i've had them in a dozen countries, so trust me! you'll regret it the next morning, but who care about that !

It's located right on Campo Dei fiori, a piazza in centre off Corso Vittorio Emmanuele. Cocktails are cheap, and good, just ask James or Harold for something special , lol, and tell them what you want in it. +++ You can chill outside even during the winter because of the full blast heaters

LEVI'S RIVER BAR

LEVI'S RIVER BAR - "Baretto sul Tevere" - Ponte di Castel Sant'Angelo

LEVI'S RIVER BAR is if you want, the summer edition of our beloved Baretto on via garibaldi. It located exactly next to la Maison Estiva, just carry on walking a few meters and you'll find it along the river.

It is the perfect place to go for a drink before going to la maison, or just to chill on a wednesday night when Martina is DJing; The clientèle of the Baretto , including me , basically moves there every wednesday and saturday night.

The location is great, and its so chill to have a drink while looking out at the Tevere (Tiber). And if you feel like playing ping pong or Billiardino, just go up the stairs and you'll find tables waiting for you on the lungotevere. Italians put as much heart into a game of billiardino as they would if they were playing the Football World Cup Final :) . If you are sensitive don't bother going up there, slander and swearing are not optional!

IL BARETTO

IL BARETTO - Via Garibaldi , 27.

This is going to be an emotional article. There are no words to describe what this place means to me. . . It's pretty much been the setting for the 180 my life in Rome has made. It's funny, Special, Memorable. It's the place where i met the people who made me love Rome so much, and it's filled with so many perfect memories.

Baretto is a small bar on the Gianicolo, at the corner of via garibaldi and Via Nicolo Fabrizi. You should get there around 11pm because that is when its gets started. It's 100% Italian. Go to the Bar and ask Arthur (Arturo) the German Barman for a special cocktail. He makes an amazing Vodka Cooler, and this crazy drink with Vodka Passoa and Passionfruit i had once. The prices are 5 euros a drink for us, but you're probs going to have to pay 8 euros..

Its the Home of the Baretto Boys, and the Baretto Girls. Check it out on any night of the week, but wednesdays Martina is DJing ---- check out the link (though these days she's moved to the Baretto on the River, the River Bar on wednesdays) --- and she has amazing taste in music so I advise you to go see her. Fridays and Saturdays it's always very crowded aswell .

You can take your drink downstairs to one of the tables in the little Garden, but the whole fun of going to Baretto is hanging outside the Bar, where everyone is pretty much just standing on the sidewalk... but thats part of the Baretto Mood.
If you want to have an amazing, chilled out night, meet great people, and get quite drunk whilst listening to good music , this is where you need to go.

SPAZIO 900

SPAZIO 900 - EUR

The Spazio is pretty much what it claims to be, a massive space . The location in itself isn't all that special, , besides the fact that its one gigantic room, with two huge terasses. It's a bit out of the way, as the EUR district is at the very south of the city.

But its amazing for electro concerts. I went there to see 2manyDJs a couple of months back, and it was amazing enough to rank in my top 5 nights in Rome since i got here. Imagine about 3000 (maybe i'm exagerating) people , al huge fans of the DJs , dancing and dancing and dancing. The terasses overlook the EUR, which in the Ghost city kinda place, is pretty impressive. The EUR was built for the World Show in Rome (Esposizione Universale Roma = EUR. get it?)

Anyways, if i huge house/techno/electro act is in Town and they're playing there, i advise you to go , you won't forget about it.

BLOOM

copyright : Romaexclusive

BLOOM - Pzza Navona

BLOOM is a rather small club, but then again , sometimes it is true that good things come in small packages. Because it's small its also more intimate. The decoration is simple and stylish, i particularly like the bar, and the clientèle is in their mid twenties, early thirties, as usual mingled with the occasional foreign students.

Other than being a club , Bloom is also a chilled place to enjoy apperitivo during the winter, and it is also a Cocktail Bar. If you spend the evening there you can basically see it shifting from one to the other , and onto the next.

Via del Teatro Pace 30,

MAXXI - Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo

MAXXI - Via Guido Reni 6
http://www.maxxi.beniculturali.it/english/museo.htm

The MAXXI is the National Museum for 21st Century Arts, that opened just 5 weeks ago, at the end of May,

MAXXI is home to two institutions that share the spaces and resources of the new museum:
MAXXI art and MAXXI architecture

ABSOLUTE MUST.

It might be than your overdose of Roman museums when you first got here , still gives you the chills and when you hear "oh lets go to that Museum", you run in the other direction. well i have one thing to say to that . CONQUER YOUR FEAR! and go to the MAXXI. its unbelievable, its different, and most of all, it's actually fun! the maze of stairs makes you feel more like you're in a funhouse than in a Museum. The architecture , both of the site itself and the works that are presented within will satisfy anyones craving for that art, be he an Architecture student or not.

and you wanna know what makes this even better?
On thursdays, go there around 8 pm , get your ticket for 11 euros , take a tour for a couple of hours and then have an apperitivo on the site , with concerts and the privilege of chilling out at night in such an amazing place.

APPERITIVO EVERY THURSDAY FROM 10pm to 00am.

La Maison

LA MAISON -Winter Edition

La Maison was one of the first clubs I discovered in Rome, and was also one of my Favourites for Winter. I want to use a very Roman saying here... la maison is really "Molto Chic" (Very Elegant). It was the best place to go , and our Home on wednesday Nights from november to May.

The music is nice, the place is gorgeous, and you feel like you've just walked into an oversized french Boudoire

The clientèle ranges from everything from uper-class to your average foreign student enjoying a night out in the Eternal City.

Entrance is free as usual, but (also as usual) you must be on LISTA.

This year wednesdays were KARMA EVENTI nights, quindi you merely had to say "Lista Karma Eventi" to my lovely friend Fabrizio in order to get in.

If you feel like dressing up, and having a good night dancing with the girls (or the Guys) this is the place to go.

Watch out for the ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS bartender :) he broke our hearts everytime he walked past us !!

AKAB

AKAB - Testaccio

Akab, Akab, Akab....for someone who has grown up in Paris like me ,and has therefor been used to pretty amazing music going out, this is pure HEAVEN.

!!! ELECTRO HEAVEN !!!

During fall, Winter and Spring, every Tuesday l'Elektrica organised an Electro night at L'AKAB. you CANNOT MISS IT.
l'Akab is a bit more underground than the other two. You don't bring your Mini dress and your Stilletos. you go in ripped Jeans and Bicker Boots and you DANCE like you've Never danced before.
No need for list ( I think)though if you don't know the people at the door I advise you to get there early.

Entry is 10 Euros with a free drink --- Vodka Redbull or Vodka Lemon all the way :)

The place is sweaty, its Dark, its Promiscuous, but it's amazing. You just close your eyes and you literally let the music possess you. This is where you will hear , by far,

The Best Music in Rome.
